I was initially reluctant to watch this film because it isn’t my cup of tea but I decided why not give it a chance. The movie is about a K-pop Girl group (Rumi, Mira, and Zoey) called HUNER/X who fight to keep demons in their realm while singing and dancing for their fans on stage.
They use the power of their voice to seal the Hunmoon keeping the demons in said realm. Problems start to occur when a new hot demon K-pop group of boys called The Saja Boys burst on the scene with a single that steals the crowd. The girls have to balance keeping their fans interested, fight demons and find out the Sajas boys intentions all while dealing with personal crises.
This movie is incredibly well written and shows that even celebrities go through tough times, they aren’t perfect, but it does it in a fun uplifting way with songs that you can’t help but sing along to.
It also captures the importance of friendship, communication, and honesty and that without it things can tend to fall apart like the Hunmoon. Once the girls stopped being in sync more demons were able to break through the barrier, But once they sang it out and accepted each other they were undefeatable.
Another topic that they cover is that not everything is always what it seems, especially with Jinu ( the lead singer for the Saja Boys) who has a very dark and traumatic past. We are led to believe that he was forced to leave his sister and mother while he gets treated like a king, but that is completely mistaken. After finding out the truth it’s hard to trust Jinu and what he says but he ends up realizing his faults and making up for the misdirection.
Now let’s talk about the songs. Even though parts of the songs are in Korean (which I do not understand) it makes it more realistic, authentic and even more fun to listen to. It’s interesting hearing another language be sung and trying to figure out what certain words mean. As well as comparing them to English words that sound familiar. The producers made the perfect balance between English and Korean when writing these songs.
They also did a really good job on casting characters, they all have very distinct voices that you can tell apart most of the time. It is very hard in songs for the voices to not completely blend together and make one voice, it is good to be able to hear the different pitches throughout the songs as well.
The Saja Boys was a perfect addition to this movie and hearing as well as asking others who they’d choose if they were one of the girls is the highlight of talking about the movie. Baby Saja is of course the only right answer for who to choose but Jinu is a close second.
The girls also swooning over the boys is a hilarious addition to the film and adds a sense of realness to each scene. Seeing the fans ship the two groups together is so cute and is also very realistic for many celebrities that work together. It was a small but major detail to add and create connection with the audience.
A key element to this movie was also the pace, it wasn’t rushed or dragged. Lots of movies/shows tend to rush the ending because they just want it to be finished, but these creators took their time and made sure that wouldn’t happen. They didn’t explain things when it was unnecessary to and they didn’t take to long when they had to go into more details for curtain things
Overall this movie was an eye opener and made me step out of my comfort zone and try something new, which can be scary but worth it. This movie was definitely one that was worth watching. It had a fun concept and out of this world Catchy songs that went straight onto my playlist. I listen to this sound track everyday trying to learn the Korean parts and get it down.
I rate this movie 4.8 stars and would absolutely recommend it to everyone, as it teaches important lessons and brings a positive light to possible real life struggles. I am so glad that I watched this movie and will continue to watch it at least once a week for as long as I can. It has easily become my favorite movie of all time.
