Gender Inequality has been a constant topic since before women earned the right to vote. I am a women enthusiast and I love strong female leads in a movie or show.
The Los Angeles Reuters did research and made a report on the increase in female leads in comparison to women of color not having the same outcome.
Reports found that, in the top 100 movies of 2024, more than half of the movies had a female lead or co-lead.
Movies like, “Challengers” with lead Zendaya, “The Substance” with lead Demi Moore and “Anora” with lead Mikey Madison.
In total, there were 54 women or girls featured as either a lead or co-lead in the 2024 top 100 movies. In 2023, there were 30 films with a lead/ co-lead female so we had a nice increase.
This is huge for women in moving forward for more gender equality in different fields.
Although this is great news, women of color have had a decrease in appearance in film since 2023.
Out of the 54 women that were leads/co-leads, 25 of them were women of color.
That number isn’t terrible but we don’t want to say that. We want to look at the numbers and say, “That’s amazing!” or, “We’ve come so far!”
In 2023, we had 37 women in lead/co-lead roles. The decrease in just one year is unreasonable.
Unfortunately, we are having change but it has taken so long. For a long period of time in society, we had one way that a woman should look.
We are hardly moving forward and as women we need to be aware of this. We need to open people’s eyes to the unfair treatment and hope to make change faster.
