“Nostalgia.” An odd name huh? Don’t worry I feel the same way too when I think about that word. But right now, it seems to have taken a toll on me. Nostalgia from my own perspective is looking back at the past and being in a state of remembrance. For example, a certain song may trigger memories and keep you reminded of things back then.
Or just early memories of your childhood that keep you thinking and just wondering, “Why did it end so quicky?” Experiencing nostalgia is a positive thing and kind of odd at the same time. Because not only are you just wishing for the memories that can never be relived again, but also gathering a sense of just complete peace of moments that had meaning.
But now you guys may tell me, ‘Hey Michael, what’s a liminal space?” Liminal spaces is relating to a transitional or initial state of a process. What makes them so unique is the feeling being triggered when you look at an image. For example, an abandoned building, hallways, airports, supermarkets, playgrounds and more are all great examples of what a Liminal Space is.
By now you’ve probably already seen around the internet pictures or just random images portraying what these spaces are. Feelings of discomfort, eeriness, and uncanniness are natural responses people share looking at them, but how do you feel when looking at one? Things like an altering reality is what comes to mind, or overall just the familiarity.
As you grow into adulthood, understand that it is completely okay to feel this way from time to time. Our past experiences can sometimes interfere with our present ones today, but there is a realization that starts to come when you get caught in these moments of Nostalgia. Maturity comes along way and encountering that feeling itself is beautiful.
When our minds are desperate enough to make us relive those happy and beautiful experiences for the sake of our own comfort or something to smile at is the true essence of Nostalgia.
