The book Getting Libertarianism Right is one of the greatest books for an introduction to libertarianism out there, despite its flaws. The book is written by Hans-Hermann Hoppe, one of the most influential libertarians in existence, who has pioneered the movement from almost non-existent to an important factor in modern politics. The book is surely a hard read, however the amount of information in it is invaluable, and is almost certainly a worthwhile read for anyone interested in modern politics.
The book is formatted into multiple sections, consisting of talks given by the author. Using a few presuppositions, he makes logical deductions that explain much of what we see in the modern world. He also attempts, and overall succeeds, in giving possible solutions to problems that still adhere to libertarian values.
In the book, he analyzes the primary political parties (AKA the republicans and democrats), and attempts to define what differentiates them, and what differentiates both from Libertarians. He comes to the conclusion that, while both primary political parties have many flaws, the republican party has more similarities to the libertarian party, and are therefore easier to convert from republican to libertarian.
Adding on top of that, he deconstructs the ideology of the “Left Libertarian”, and shows how, due to the “anti-discrimination” and “non-discriminatory immigration” policies they support, they are not libertarians at all.
Even with all the praise this book deserves for giving so much content in such a short and cheap book, this book is not without its flaws.
In some parts, the author’s bias towards some groups of people is evident. For example, at some points in the book it portrays the left as completely illogical as opposed to the right, like when the author states “The Right recognizes, as a matter of fact, the existence of individual human differences and diversities and accepts them as natural, whereas the left denies the existence of such differences and diversities or tries to explain them away and in any case regards them as something unnatural that must be rectified”
There are other cases of the author making statements that show his bias, and so while the book contains many great pieces of information, it’s still important to look at the book critically, logic things out for yourself, and determine whether certain statements are true or false, which is only possible due to the “a priori” nature of a lot of libertarian ideology.
