On Friday October 6, there was a car fire in the parking lot of the Olive Garden in Lawerence Township, NJ. Firefighters say that the fire was caused by friction from the axle when the car was started.
The owner of the car tried to ask stores nearby for a fire extinguisher however many stores denied him access, he grabbed a handful of water bottles and began to throw them on top of the wheel.
While waiting for the firefighters to arrive a civilian from the street began to join in on extinguishing the fire, after running out of water bottles to throw the car owner ran back into the stores trying to convince someone to give out a fire extinguisher as the fire got deeper into the car.
When the car owner came back with the fire extinguisher the man on the street went into the car and started to extinguish the fire. When asked why he did this he said, “I couldn’t stand around doing nothing, the fire department was taking to long and if the fire wasn’t put out it would have spread to all of the other cars.”
At one point the right back tire caught on fire, and bystanders were told to move back because there was a fear that the car would explode. This was before the fire department arrived.
